It was really great to see all my old coworkers who were able to make it to Ferry Plaza on Sunday. Catherine, Jonathan, Ray, Momo, Ben, Amnon, Naomi, and I were able to make it. Since I organized things, sorry to anyone I missed (I don’t have everyone’s email address).
Thanks to Jonathan for treating us to a wonderful 2003 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir from Klopp Ranch, Sonoma. The wine was wonderful with ripe cherry and blackberry flavors. The tannins were really smooth and velvety.
I treated the next round – 2000 Marston Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. I quite enjoyed this wine although it was a little full bodied for most. I think Ray and I liked it the most since we lean toward bigger Bordeaux style wines. The nose has some wonderful cassis and blackberry fruit. The tannins were well structured and balanced. I don’t think it was too soon for this wine, although perhaps it could have used a couple more years of bottle aging.
Many thanks to Catherine for treating us to our final round – a nice Italian Borolo. Unfortunately, I was too busy talking to remember the specifics of the wine. We also shared a couple of nice cured meats, cheeses, olives, and bread.
Although Amnon and Jonathan had to take off after wine tasting, the remaining six of us ventured to MarketBar to have lunch. I did the prix fixe menu which started with an asparagus soup. The soup was a bit watery and was definitely not reduced enough. It was also a bit bland and lacked proper seasoning. My main course was a braised chicken with fava beans. Again, this could have been tasty had it been properly seasoned. I added a little salt while eating but it is no substitute for proper seasoning during the cooking process. My menu completed with a pineapple upside down cake – nothing spectacular, but not bad. Overall, I might stop in again to try a sandwich when in the area but I wouldn’t go out of my way. Although the food was not perfect, I would still like to thank Ray for his generosity in treating us to lunch.
Thanks for making it out. It was great to see you all and we should try to do this again, perhaps on a nice warm sunny day, if we ever see that kind of weather in the area again!
